The Sounding Treasure of the North
Village Anthems – The Sounding Treasure of the North is a unique folk music project within the OULU2026 European Capital of Culture programme. It brings North Ostrobothnian peasant melodies and old dance tunes into the present day—and, hopefully, back to where they were first established: villages, homes, and dance halls.

The folk music tradition of North Ostrobothnia in the 18th and 19th centuries has remained largely unstudied—not because it was insignificant, but quite the opposite. The region nurtured exceptionally skilled and distinctive playing, often carried by talented and highly educated musicians. Individual artistry and communal experience went hand in hand, giving music a deeply meaningful role in village life. The Sounding Treasure Chest of the North highlights this repertoire at the intersection of folk and art music, asking: what makes music valuable?
Many of these old pieces have not been heard in their full brilliance for centuries. Their contexts and performance traditions have faded, leaving only the notes behind. This project restores them as a living experience.
Rooted in local heritage, the project also opens doors to broad collaboration and intercultural dialogue. It brings together folk musicians and fiddlers who revive and renew the rich peasant tradition of the Oulu region, uniting young players with seasoned musicians from across Finland.
The musical promoter of the project is Antti Järvelä, a versatile folk musician known as an inspiring visionary, a profound connoisseur of tradition, and a skilled leader of large ensembles. Collaborators include Orivesi All Stars and the Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
The Sounding Treasure Chest of the North will also form part of the North Ostrobothnia programme at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival 2026, in collaboration with the North Ostrobothnia Folk Music Association.
