If I Could Sing Like a Bird

If I Could Sing Like a Bird is a folk music project that brings forward the voice and heart of Kven and Meänkieli culture. At the core of the project is the search for folk songs and folk music – melodies that have traveled from Finland to the Tornio River Valley and to Finnmark, changing and being shaped over time.

To realize the musical content for this project, a unique ensemble has been formed, combining the energetic traditional interpretation of the Oulu-based folk music group Rällä, the intimate and experimental tone of the duo Aaret, and Nikolai Äystö’s Meänkieli singing and storytelling. Together they create a polyphonic whole that brings out the echo of northern landscapes and the power of new interpretations. If I Could Sing Like a Bird is part of the Village Anthems Oulu2026 project by the Folk Music Association Rällä.
