Eternal Time

Village Anthems – Eternal Time extends the OULU2026 European Capital of Culture programme to the western region. In Eternal Time, the ancient tradition of Finnish folk music meets contemporary music technology. The project weaves together the timeless sound of the kantele with modern expressions such as pop, world music, and experimental sound art, creating a unique dialogue between past and future.

The project’s experimental and boundary-crossing approach is embodied by kantele artist Maija Kauhanen’s exploratory works and the innovative kantele music of Hakosalo_Tuohino, where the traditional instrument takes on new roles in sound art and technology. Here, the kantele is not just an echo of history but a living instrument that bends, transforms, and resonates in new contexts.
Through electronic processes, live performance, and improvisation, the kantele opens soundscapes that are both unexpected and immersive. Free from genre boundaries, it can move from experimental pop to performative sound art, revealing the instrument’s potential not only to preserve tradition but to shape the music of the future.
Participation is central to Eternal Time. The kantele is not only an instrument but a way of being in music, inviting audiences to stop, listen, and take part. Interactive art events encourage everyone to explore sound, where even beginners can create beauty with the kantele’s resonant tones.
Moments of playing become moments outside of time: each performance is unique, unrepeatable, and a reflection of the present. In Eternal Time, music is a way of existing in the world—open to all, encouraging experimentation, and offering each participant their own path into sound and silence.
